
Azim Azimzadeh (1880-1943)
Azim Aslan Azimzadeh was born on the 30th of April, 1880 in Baku.
He was the first cartoonist and the first man who got the name of People’s Artist of Azerbaijan.
Starting from 1906, he had been working at satirical graphic, illustration, posters and theatre décor. He also cooperated with a number of satirical magazines published in Baku, such as “Molla Nasreddin” (1906-1931), “Zenbur” (1909-1910), “Kelniyyet” (1912-1913), “Baraban” (1912-1913), “Bich” (1909-1916), “Mezeli” (1914-1915), “Babayi-Amir” (1915-1916), “Tuti” (1914-1916), “Zenbur (1919).
In 1922-1931 he was the art director of “Molla Nasreddin” satirical magazine. He made illustrations to many books.
In the period from 1920 to 1943, he had worked as a teacher in the Art School and as a School head master in 1932-1937.
He was the first Chairman of Azerbaijan Artists’ Union founded in 1940. He was the author of a great number of anti-war cartoons, posters and satirical drawings exposing the German fascism in the period of the World War II. A.Azimzadeh, who took the honorary position in the chronicle of the fine arts of Azerbaijan in the XX century, died in Baku on the 16th of June, 1943.

Azerbaijan Cartoonists’ Union will prepare a Catalogue under the name “Artist and Cartoon” including best cartoons of the Contest. Awarded cartoons and 100 best cartoon works of the Contest will be placed in the Catalogue. Cartoonists will get free copies till the end of 2010.

“Molla Nasreddin” – Azerbaijan - 2010
THEME: “Artist” (“Fine Arts Withstanding the Test of Time”)
Azerbaijan Cartoonists’ Union announces International Cartoon Contest “Molla Nasreddin – Azerbaijan 2010”. The III International Cartoon Contest is held by the support of Azerbaijan Republic Culture and Tourism Ministry, Azerbaijan Artists’ Union and FECO ( Federation of Cartoonists Organisations ). The Contest is organized on the occasion of the 130th anniversary of the first cartoonist of Azerbaijan A.Azimzadeh and of the 70th anniversary of Azerbaijan Artists’ Union’s foundation.
Terms of the Contest:
1. Subject: “Artist” (“Fine Arts Withstanding the Test of Time”).
2. Contest is open to all professional and amateur cartoonists.
3. Deadline is April 15, 2010.
4. Only original works are accepted.
At the same time signed and numbered prints by the
cartoonist are accepted.
5. Each cartoonist can submit a max of 2 cartoon works.
6. Format: min A4, max A3.
7. Cartoons that won places in other contests are not accepted.
9. Originals works can be sent back on special request.
10. The copyright always remains by the artists, the selected
cartoons may be used free for catalogue and promotion of
the contest
